HOW TO DEAL WITH THE PRESSURES OF COLLEGE?

Starting college can be extremely exciting, especially when living away at York University Housing by Quad. It is accompanied by the zeal to succeed and doing your absolute best. Doing your best can at times lead to overwhelming stress. There are chances that your marks might drop significantly.  Trying to find your educational groove can be difficult. At times it could feel like the walls are closing in on you. Following are a few tips to keep in mind when going through this feeling.

  1. Believe in yourself:

When you feel yourself slipping, remind yourself that you got here with all your hard work and dedication. If there has been a drastic drop in your marks, take a step back and breathe. Remind yourself that university is harder. A drop in grades happens to everyone. You could try different studying methods and figure out which one works for you.

  1. It’s okay to be imperfect:

Yes, self-improvement is important. But second-guessing yourself can lead to a waste of time. So whatever you do, give it your best. Always remember “Done is better than perfect”.

  1. Prioritize:

Make a to-do list and prioritize your time accordingly. Keeping a planner and organizing all of your school work will help you manage time smartly. When we tend to think about all the things that we have to do, panic sets in. Having a checklist and ticking things off it will help you to have a clearer picture.

  1. Study in Groups:

Studying in a group can do more good than you think. When you study in a group you can easily chat about topics, discuss ideas and help one another with editing. It not only helps you to make friends and work towards the same goal but also helps you to clear doubts as and when they arise.

  1. Talk:

Overwhelming pressure can make one feel really lonely. Opening yourself up and having a heart to heart conversation with one of your fellows would not only lessen your burden but also make you realize that you are not alone. Letting things bottle up might make you feel that you will explode out of frustration and might hinder you from achieving your dreams.

  1. Give yourself a break:

Yes, we all want to succeed. That pressure does not let us take a breather which is extremely crucial. Give yourself a break. Go out with friends, watch a show or movie, workout or just sleep. This is essential for your mental health. When you get back to work after taking a break you will feel rejuvenated.

  1. It’s okay to ask for help:

Sometimes there is a sense of shame attached to this, you should know that people around you are also going through this. Your school might be offering services that help people to deal with anxiety and stress. There are academic advisors and student services that are always working towards creating a healthy environment.
