A Certified Endoscope reprocessor is also known as a GI Scope reprocessor. These types of professionals are used to operate scopes that can view the gastrointestinal systems. The viewing of the gastrointestinal system allows doctors to find and treat any issues that they find wrong with the gastrointestinal system. This can be treating an actual disease or a preventive measure. Since the specialty has become so prominent and is changing rapidly due to technology. The endoscope reprocessors are now required to pass a state certification exam to ensure that they have the knowledge and skills to get the job done. This certification exam is known as the Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor Certification Exam and it is also called the GI Scope Exam.
Is Becoming a CFER A Good Career Choice
If an individual chooses to become a CFER technician it happens to be a very good career choice and is a very valuable skillset to have. It is becoming a trend that hospitals and surgery centers that perform a lot of endoscopic procedures prefer to hire CFER technicians. Because technology is evolving so is the field of endoscopy so there has been an increase in the procedure being performed. So now when individuals experience gastroenterology issues they prefer to have an endoscopy done. The reason why is because it is less invasive than surgery and the doctor can see, treat, and diagnose any gastroenterology problems. So because of the increased use of the endoscopy procedure, there is definitely an increase in the demand of CFER Technicians.
What Requirements Are Needed To Take The CFER Exam
The governing body that GI Scope exam is under the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution. If you obtain the CFER certification you will then be considered an expert when it comes to a flexible endoscope reprocessing. You also be able to work as a sterile processing technician and a GI endoscopy technician. It is important to note that CBSPD does not discriminate against anyone who is trying to obtain their CFER Exam. So what this means is that your race, religion, national origin, and sex does not disqualify you from taking the exam. There are certain requirements of eligibility that the candidate has to meet in order to qualify to take the GI Scope exam and they are you have to read, write, and speak English. The reason why it is important to read, write, and speak English is that the test is only given in English. The second qualification that is needed for the individual to take the CFER exam is that you have to meet one of these requirements.
The first requirement is the completion of 12 months of full-time employment processing flexible endoscopes. If you do not meet this requirement your second option would be the completion of an endoscopy technician course with a grade of 70 or higher in a minimum of 8 hours and working at least 6 months processing flexible endoscopes. If you do not meet any of the first two requirements, there is a third option which is the completion of an endoscopy technician course with a grade of 70 or higher in a minimum of 16 hours. Finally the last way to qualify for the program is if you have sold GI endoscopy products for at least 12 months. So if you speak, read, write, and have done any one of the four listed items in terms of experience when it comes to processing flexible endoscopes or have sold any GI endoscopy products you will qualify to take the CFER exam.
